Financial Sponsor for a relative

Guys, please help me with this question.

I am a LPR since March 07. I have an aunt that got married to an US citizen and he is petioning her. The issue is that his income does not seem to be enough for him to say he will be supporting her and she asked me if I could also "sponsor" her as another person providing support. I don't provide support for her nor I intend to do so, since once she gets her EAD she'll start working.

Anyways, the question is if I can/should do that. Will I be getting in trouble if she applies to government help (which she has no intention to do, but no one knows what the future will bring)

Yes, if you co-sign as a sponsor the government can come after you for the money if she applies for welfare or other such benefits* before she becomes a US citizen or has worked for 40 quarters in the US.

*They won't come after if she claims unemployment benefits, as those are considered "earned benefits" paid for by the employer (employers have to pay into a government unemployment fund, with employers with high rates of layoffs paying more).
