Filing taxes...questions

Our situation is that we are currently Canadian citizens(married with dependants). During middle of March 2005 we stayed in the US for 7 days before coming back to Canada to finish things off here before going back in June or July. We also received the green cards in around this time. Firstly, do we have to file taxes for 2004? If so, can these be filed from Canada over the internet? Would it be the 1040 that needs to be filled out?
Also, how long can one stay outside of US after receiving their green cards?
Help appreciated thank you.

This is an interesting question. A GC has to file tax return as a
resident. But you got GC in 2005, then for Year 2004, do you
have to file as a resident?

By the US/Canada tax treaty, they have that right if it is to their advantage. However, if there is no US-sourced income in 2004, there is little need to do so since they were not a PR in 2004.
