Filing reentry permit (i131) for wife?

Hi,
My wife left to India in March 2007 in what we expected to be a short trip. We did not file the re-entry permit before leaving. She is now expected to come back only after 1 year is complete.

Qn: Can I have my wife complete I131 and send it to me (I am in the US) so that I can file and get the re-entry permit. I can then pass it on to her and she can use during re-entry. Is this possible? Has anybody done this before?

At the point of entry do they check to make sure the I131 was filed before leaving the country?

I don't want her to have to come back just to file the application.

Thanks

She had to file RP when she was in the US.
I don' t think they always check RP was filed before departure, but if they want, it's very easy to verify.

When she comes back to the US, they ask how long she was out of the US and she answers a year.
Then they look at the validity period on RP and found it was approved when she was out of the US. They may ask when she filed for RP.

Since it is possible to have the RP approved after travel date even when filed before travel, that by itself should not pose a problem right?

Does the RP have the filing date as well?

That is why I said they may feel suspicious on your case from approval date and may ask filig date. Especially, if they take her to secondary inspection for whatever reason, they'll ask a lot of questions.
Do you really want to go that way ? Nobody knows what consequence you'll face if they find out it was filed after departure.

If I were you, I would ask her to come before even 6 months are finished and file I 131. Nobody knows what system will be implemented in one year in this fast changing world!
