Filing N-400 prior to going on international assignment for work

I've been a permanent resident since 2004 and am eligible to file my N-400 but I recently found out that I may be able to undertake a 2 year international assignment for my company. Ideally I would want to obtain US Citizenship & passport prior to leaving but the company wants me to go in 3 months time.

So, I have a couple of questions I'm hoping you guys can help me with ...

  • Should I file my N-400 and hope I can complete the process in 3 months ?
  • What happens if I file my N-400 and leave the US to take the assignment prior to the process completing ?
  • Could I return temporarily from overseas to do the fingerprinting & interview if necessary ?
  • Should I just not bother filing my N-400 until I get back and waiting the 4 years until I can file again ?

Any comments & suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

Is the assignment for a US based company? If so, you can apply now but don't expect to complete the process within 3 months. You'll need to return to the US for FP and interview if you don't get either done before you leave. Also, ask your company if they are willing to file N-470 for you as an added measure to preserve your continuous residence.

If your situation is not the one described above by Bob, then you can file right now and will still be able to Naturalize even if you have to come back for your Oath or interview, I am pretty sure you will be done with your FP in next three months possibly even a interview. There are some DO's that do the whole thing in just about 3 months.
