Filing I485 along with I130?

I am a student in the US and my wife, a US citizen, has filed an I-130 for me in Apr 2004 to change my status from F1 to green card. My question being should I have filed I-485 at the same time. At that time I thought it might be of no problem if I waited until our case was approved. Now I doubt if it is better to file it ASAP.

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Spouses of U.S. citizens have the opportunity to file for AOS at the same time as they file I-130. If you didn't, you can still file your I-485, I-765 and I-131 (the last two, if desired) at your local office, with a copy of a notice of receipt for I-130. If you filed your I-130 in Vermont center, it only takes several months for it to be approved, and then you can go through the consular processing, since it's quicker. In other places, it really doesn't matter, because they take longer...

Once you file I-485, and it's ready to be adjudicated, your local office will request your I-130 from the service center and it will be transfered and adjudicated at the same time with I-485.
