Hi
I got my status changed from F1 to H1 on Apr1, 2002. Prior to this my employer didnt withhold Fica/Medicare since I was on F1. I havent seen any withholdings in this regard after Apr1 either.
Can someone tell me if they are supposed to withhold it once my I797 is approved or after I get the H1 Visa on the passport.

If status is H1 employer has to deduct

Verify with your HR and Accounting Dept and see if they have your updated W4 and I-9 on file. Sometimes deductions take time depending on payroll cycles.
 
Notify HR you are on H1 status

You have to notify HR department in your company about your new status. They should start deducting FICA taxes after that.
