Hi,

I am a PhD student (Indian) and have 3 years left for completion of my degree. My F1 expires in Dec 06. I will be visiting India in January 07 for 4 months for field work related to my research. I wish to get my F1 renewed when I am in India. Can somebody please explain me the procedure for renewal of F1 visa? I know it is a very basic question but I need advice.

Before you leave US, get an I-20 form for the OIPS and proof of assistantship (if it's the case) or financial support.

In India go to the American Consulate with all the paperwork and a valid passport and apply for your visa. It should go smooth...Be aware that might be some delay in getting approved. A friend (also Indian) of my husband's had to wait 2 mo. So, go and apply for your F1 as soon as you enter your country.

F1 renewal

Is it a drop box system for the renewal? Or do I have to fix an appointment date and go with the paper work to the counsulate on that day? Is the delay for getting appointment date or for the renewal of the visa?
 
I have no clue how this is working in your country. In my case, I went to the American Consulate the second day I landed in my country and I filled an application for visa renewal. I wanted to make sure that they had plenty of time for processing. You will not get it immendiately, especially now... Make sure you give them time.
