FBI/CIA background check and Identity theft

Hi,
I am waiting for fingerprinting for my I-485 (VSC). In the meantime, I became an unfortunate victim of identity theft. Someone used my SSN and birthday, applied for several credit cards and already incurred more than several thousand dollars of charge. I found it out from my credit record and notified those banks about the incident. People from those banks recommended that I should also contact the police.
With I-485 in processing and FP scheduled in April, I am a bit paranoid about contacting the police and causing any delay in 485 processing. If my SSN is under investigation for ID theft, wouldn\'t it cause a problem in I-485 process even if I am a victim of the incident?

I am not exactly sure how the FBI/CIA background check works. I have no criminal record at all, but I feel uncomfortable that my ID has been used fraudulently. Should I contact the police immediately and notify this? Will it cause any problem for 485 processing time? If you have any opinion, please share it with me.
 Thanks in advance!

You are the victim

Since you are the victim you should not have apprehension about a negative check from police etc. What if banks pursue the ID thieves and have to share your information with FBI? Better inform police and go for FP earliest.

Someone stole my credit card too and used it. It is totally a seperate issue from INS. You\'ll have problems only when you commit a crime; not when you were affected by it. So report the even to the cops immediately.

Yeah I agree ... stolen identity is more severe than a stolen credit card. But one common thing between the 2 is that you\'re the victim (not the criminal).

I would suggest you report to police immediately. Write down the referece number of your police report and location of the jurisdiction. Send letters to every institution which have reqested your credit information in the past. Reference your policy report in your letters. Close those accounts and make sure it marked as "closed due to identity theft" on your credit report. There are three credit report agencies, usually you only need to deal with one of the three. Other two will update their reports. But if you want to be conservative, check all three. My opinion on impact on GC, it only help you if you report this to plice. I absolutely agree you are a victim and you do not need to be afraid of. What about this sinario, someone committed a crime using your identity before you report to plice you are a victim of identity theft. Are you getting more trouble? think about it.

Thanks for your suggestions, all. I did contact all three credit agencies and other affected creditors. Initially, the reason I was paranoid about reporting to the police was that if INS notices anything abnormal about my record, even if I am the victim of the identity theft, it could lead to prolonged investigation or interview and significantly delay my I-485. I am very concerned about getting an interview notice and causing a long delay in I-485 (my case is self-petitioned NIW).
My FP has been done electronically yesterday. I am hoping that there is no negative record reported due to identity theft.
Based on the suggestion, I think I should contact the polie asap.
If you have any further suggestion on what I should do and what\'s likely to happen, please share it with me.
 Thanks a lot!
