Hello everyone,

I was asked to provide an FBI backgound check for my PR application. I know that I have to send my fingerprints to thr FBI but the problem is that i am out of status here so I am not sure if this would reflected in my police certificate or make me subject to deportation from th US. If anybody know of a similar case, I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks

Go to any place that do finger prints. You should have valid DL or ID. Tell them you need it for Canadian Immigration. Send it to FBI with a cover letter from the consulate. They will send you back after doing the background check in 12-16 weeks. BC does not need status.

Thank you hannah for your reply. So, if I got it right, the FBI only check for criminal record not immigration status?

Thanks again.

Guess my question now would be: is it mandatory to have a SSN to get the FBI background check. I think it is required while filling in the FBI fingerprint card.

Thanks for your help.

No if you dont have it,its ok with them. They just need one type of ID,your name and address.Thats it and you would be ok.

Hi Hannah. Thank you so much for your help. I am really confused here. How would the FBI be able to conduct a background check without SSN. Do I have to submit a piece of identification with my fingerprints? do you know anybody who has been through the same process?

Your help is very much appreciated.

You do not need to be in status for an FBI fingerprint check. However, if I am not wrong, you need valid residency (temporary or permanent) to apply for Canadian immigration if you are applying in a country other than your country of citizenship. This does not apply to those who are applying from countries where immigrant visas are not issued by the local Canadian Embassy/High Commission.
