F2 TO F1 - Change of Status

I am in USA on F2 visa (over 1 year now). I have got admission acceptance from a good local college for MS program with tution waiver and assistantship. To avail of this opportunity I will have to convert to F1 status.

I am trying to avoid the lengthy processing time of internal change of status process. Does anyone know or have any experience related to this. Can I go to Canada to get my F1 visa stamping done?

Please respond with suggestions.

you can try, but you should be prepared to travel to your own country to get a visa directly from Canada, should you get a visa denial in Canada.
