F1 staying out of US for more than the 5month period, advice needed as soon as possible.

Hi!! One of my friends, who was doing his masters, left to his home country BEFORE completing his masters. Due to some health problems he couldnt come back to the United States till today. He left US on 26th dec 2000. Now he\'s worring if he\'ll be allowed to come back and complete his masters and thereby become eligible for Practical training. Heard that the maximum time you can be out of the country is 5months. Is this true and if it is what do you suggest him. Advice needed as soon as possible please.
