F1 OPT and visa status

Hi there,
i'm graduating in May 05 and my F1 visa expires in Late July. Is it possible for me to get an OPT when I graduate and remain a legal immigrant for the next year? if not, what are my options? Just want to plan ahead and not scramble the last minute. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ajith

yes, once you apply for OPT (give your INternational center some time to process your papers), you will have to start the OPT within 60 days of the expiration date on your I-20 or graduation date, whichever comes first. Once your OPT is approved, your INternational Center will make an annotation on the third page of your I-20 thereby extending it for a year. You will be in legal NON-immigrant status for a year. You have to be working full-time or actively looking for a job while on OPT. You can study part-time. If you transfer to another school or program, you will forfeit your OPT.
