Help! I'm heading from Canada to USA for MBA on a F1 visa. When activating cell phone, and applying for credit cards, they ask for a social security number. i've got a graduate assistantship, would that be considered on-campus employment? If so, I presume that would make me eligible for a SSN... any thoughts?

yeah. All F-1 Students are allow to get SSN, because you will be able to work on campus. Just go to your local SSN office that's near your campus...there are like millions of them around the country.

Having a SSN is will let you to get a cell phone no problem. (depends on the carrier, some carrier wants to you sign a longer lease or pay some kinda deposit.)

However, it's not going be good enough for you to apply credit cards, because in the application, they will ask you if you are a Citizen or PR. Of course, you are NOT...& therefore, it will be quite hard to get a credit card. It's still possible tho.

credit cards are certainly available to F-1 students. I have had quite a few of them over the years.

Yes, your assistantship is considered on-campus employment. As per new rules that came out last October, you need to bring a letter from your INternational center about your assistantship to the SSA office when you go there to apply for SSN.
