F- Visa Renewal - Chennai - URGENT

I have been a student in a PhD program in the US since Aug 1997. I came here on a 5-yr multiple entry F-1 visa, which has now expired. My current I-20 runs till August 2003 with full financial aid. I need to visit India briefly in Dec and need to apply for a renewal of the F-1 visa in Chennai. I wonder if there could be any issue, given the short time to expiry of the I-20 ?

Has anyone applied for F-1 visa renewal under similar circumstances and what was the result ?

Thank you

There wont be any problem. Carry a letter that states that you are still pursuing the degree and are making good progress, and funding letter.

If you want you can ask for a new I-20. Your international students office might give you one if your advisor states that you need considerable more time (although they might not do it until close to expiration of the current I-20). If you get a new I-20, the advantage is that your visa stamp expiration will coincide with the new I-20, so you will have more time on your F1 visa stamp. This might help in future if you are on OPT (otherwise if you need to travel while on OPT, renewing visa then could be difficult).

Take u re original transcripts too..
They are also important.
That will show u re progress in the work and give them confidence.
Best of luck and post u re Experience after comming.
