Hi:
I have a question regarding conversion of F-2 visa to F-1. Is it possible to change the status from F-2 to F-1 in US only, or do we need to go back to India to get the F-1 status? If yes, do we have to go back just for F-1 visa stamping or do we have to apply afresh? If we have to go for just visa stamping, can we start our studies here before we go back for stamping (just like what H1B people do; they can work but whenever they go back can get the visa stamped)?
Will appreciate the responses and thanks in advance.

yes. I-20 and form I-539 + supporting documents. No need to go home solely for stamping.

Thanks for ur response. Do u know how much time does it take to process this change of status from F-2 to F-1? Let' say, if someone comes in fall, will he/she able to start the school from spring?
Thanks.

it depends on the Service center in which your application is processing. usually about 3-4 months.

how much amount is enough to show for F-2?

i am on F-1.how much amount is kind of safe enough to show in the bank statement from US for F-2 visa application? this will be in addition to the fellowship that i get.
thank you for the response in advance..

fellowship + your money should equal the amount of money shown as needed for tuition and living expenses.
