I just finished the first year of a PhD program in California. I was recently hired in a temporary position (I will only be working during the summer) for a project at UCLA as a research assistant. Someone at human resources emailed me today saying that I need work authorization and I must have an EAD card. I never heard of an EAD card, can anyone tell me what it is, where and how I can get it?

Thank you!

Ricardo

is a project at the same university that you are going to? if not, you need EAD, which you can get by applying for Curricular Practical Training (not the same as Optional Practical training) through your University's International Center. It's done quickly and locally, no need for BCIS involvement and it's not an actual card, rather a notation/letter from the INternational center. But you have to act quickly.

If it's at the same university, you do NOT need an EAD, you can work on campus for 20 hours during the semester and 40 hours during the holidays. If the HR person still needs verification of that, have him call your International Center or get a simple letter from the INternational Center, stating that you are allowed to work on campus and you don't need EAD for it.
