F-1 visa almost expired, can I come back??

I had to drop my spring semester this year because my mother is very ill, so in a few days I need to go to Europe to visit her.

I am planning to return to the states in May.

My I-20 is valid until 2012, + my school will give me a letter saying why I had to drop the semester.

But my F-1 visa expires in Jun this year.

So when I come back, will I have some problems with the immigration officer at the airport because my f-1 visa is valid just one more month??

P.S. Do I have to register for the summer semester before or after I come back?

THANK YOU

First, make sure your school DSO signs the back of your I-20. You are fine if you plan to return in May and your visa expires in June because your visa is still valid on the date of your re-entry. The immigration officer does not care if it is valid for one month or one year so long as the visa is valid.

As for registration, summer term is not required for F1 student to register. But you should register for fall semester to show that you purpose of coming back is indeed to study. Most schools have fall registration ready in May for returning students. My advice is not legal advice and is just merely my opinion. Good luck in your studies.
