F-1 to H-1 opt quick question

Hi all,

Im graduating from school on August 15th. I'm on an F-1 and will be applying for my OPT. I have a quiestion about the date though.

Since the H-1 quota starts on October 1st and you have a 60 day grace period, If I put my OPT start date as Sept. 1st. would that deduct from my 60 day grace period?

If it does then I get 6 weeks from Sept. 1st 2006 as grace period. I guess thats cutting it close and I am also assuming I get a full 12 month OPT.

Any help on the dates I should apply for would help. Since you guys know wht ure talkng about lemme know which start date I should put on my OPT to be safe for the Oct 1st H-1 quota next year.

---It really depends on getting job. The sooner job I have, I will go for the sooner date on OPT. Once I have OPT, I will seek to get the H1. I will be looking to get the quota this year, instead of waiting for another year. I don't want to comment on what date should I put to. Look at your circumstances, and you may figure out the best of it.

I heard the OPT dat is kinda flexible. I've heard ppl sometimes dont get the full 12 months. They might get 10 or 11 months. I wonder if this has something to do with the start date after the OPT.

---In some instances CIS screws it up. And sometimes it gets screwed up by our own mistake. The mistake normally comes in hand when we give paper to International Student Advisor (ISA) for the final signature, and without looking at it, sometimes we mailed it out. ISA sometimes creates a problem as most of the time they are not aware of the situation and puts the wrong date. But OPT should be valid for 12 months, no matter what. The only thing is, if you have applied CPT, and worked in CPT, it may shorten your OPT. See if you worked in CPT for six months, then you can get only six months of OPT. Just make sure once the paper is signed by ISA, go thru it very carefully.
 
Tell them that you wanted to mail it by yourself. They should give paper back to you. The only reason you are giving them the paper is just to get their signature. Stress that after you signed it, I will mail it out.
 
I will only ask them to sign the paper without giving the supporting documents. Once they sign the paper, I will include all the relevant doc and mail it out. Don't even ask them if they can only sign it or no. Just handle the paper and ask them when u can pick it up?
