Extensions of B-1 Visas?

Hi,
I have been Dating a US citizen for around 18months and everything is awesome, we have been living in the UK (I hold a british passport) where she stayed on a tourist visa, leaving occasionally and coming back to not violate her visa duration. Now we are keen to move near her family in New York, I have read the information on the US Embassy site and the companion immigration sites, but to no avail.

I don't qualify for any of the immigration visa's so would end up applying for the B-1 visa which is not as long as I would like. We are also keen not to get married until a little down the line. I was hoping someone had some advice about anything we could do so that I can stay in the US for as long as possible.

As you can imagine this is quite demoralizing and frustrating so any help or advice would be fantastic.
 
Your only choice for a longer visit is to acquire a B2 visa, B1 is for business purposes, upon entry you can remain in US upto 6 months.
 
You just ruled out the best option for you both to be together in the US. As other's have said, if qualified, seek an employment based non-immigrant visa.

My (semi) plan is to go to the US on a tourist visa for as long as possible (6months I hope) and while I am there try and find an employer then apply for a h1b. I have a MSc and 4 years experience in that field which I understand would qualify me. Is that a reasonable plan of action or are there better options.

We are so confused as the info on each of the sites is a little unclear. Im sure we cant be the first people to struggle through this minefield

Any help is GREATLY appreciated and thank you for your replies.
