Extension based on medical reason

My grandfather came to US in August and has 10 year multiple entry visa. His I-94 is valid upto February 2008. He had a medical emergency within a week after landing in the US and requires constant followup and care and possibly another surgery. Doctor's currently do not advise him to travel at all. If I have the supporting documents from the hospital and doctors what are the chances of getting an extension? Under no circumstances he can be allowed to travel for next 6 months. In case the extension is denied is there any alternative?

Thanks in advance.

I think there is a medical visa that can be applied for... that's all the info that I have and probably am not of much help, but maybe, if the extension is denied you can potentially go that route?!? Maybe ask an attorney to be sure.
