Hi everybody
I have a valid Green Card. My passport will expire soon. Do I need to keep a valid passport while I am in USA?
Thanks for your help and advice.

No, you need not have a valid passport. You have the right to remain in the USA indefinitely (as long as you behave, of course :) )so unless you travel, you don't need a passport.

As a green card holder, you are not required to have a valid passport when you're inside the US.

But there is one common scenario where a passport is valuable within the US. If you're applying for a replacement green card because it's been lost, stolen, mutilated, or expired, you can get an I-551 stamp in your passport which essentially is a temporary green card for you to use while waiting for the plastic green card (which can take 3-6 months). Without a valid passport or passport-equivalent (e.g. refugee travel document), USCIS won't give you the I-551 stamp.

Yeah, I definitely recommend a passport in general. However, I think CIS also issued the I551 stamp on an I94 with photo card, am I right? For people without a travel document?

They used to do that, but from what I've read of people's experiences over the past year or so, apparently they've stopped giving the I-551 stamp without a passport or passport-equivalent. And the I-551 is no longer acceptable for employment (I-9) if it's not in a passport.
