Expired passport question

I am an Indian passport holder and have a greencard. I received the greencard in 2000. It was my oversight but I just realized that my Indian passport had expired in 2001. I have not travelled outside the US since 2000, so never had a reason to look at my passport. It was just locked away in my filing cabinet. I will apply for a new passport asap by mail at the Houston Indian embassy. I am hoping that in the worse possible circumstance, the Consular Officer at the Indian Embassy will want me to appear in person, instead of issuing the new passport and mailing it to me.

Will this oversight cause me any problems either with the Indian Consulate or when I apply for American Citizenship?

----Houston has Indian Consulate not Indian Embassy, Embassy of India is in DC, you can apply renewal of passport with nearest Indian consulate and even if it is expired that is not a problem you will get your new Passport

------- Talk to nearest Indian consulate what they say I dont think they need your presence but if you stay near to consulate it is better to go personaly

---contact the nearest Indian consulate they will renew the passport if it is not expired more than 1 year by mail, if it is expired more than 1 year then I think you need to visit personaly. talk to them on phone for your concerns and visit the web site of nearest Indian consulate to you and download the passport aplication and read the instructions.
will this cause any problems in future.
------ you need valid passport for travel,if you renew now no problem.

find the link for Indian consulates in US and go to the link of nearest Consulate site to your residence:

Although you have no travelling plans in future, it is always good to have your passport current.
