Friends,
Does it matter that your passport has expired when you go for Citizenship Interview?
Are we required to maintain a valid passport while in US or a GC is enough?
thanks,

People often gets hard time from BCIS even when all their paper works and necessary supporting documents are 100% accurate. Why take a chance with an expired passport. You can play with BCIS if prolonged processing time doesn't matter to you. If I were you I wouldn't take that chance. By the way, if you do go to the interview with an expired PP, please don't forget to post your experience. Good luck!!!

Yes, I do understand your argument.
Its just that I have to spend time and money to get it done and
was wondering if it was legally required at all in the first place.
thanks,

Technically it is required, yes. Because if an applicant is denied or it turns out that an alien is deportable, BCIS likes to see a valid travel document. Sorry to tell you!
But I don't think they could make you do it, if you don't! I'd imagine it could get someone upset who then would turn against your case. Do let us know what's happening in your case!

Passport is just a travel document!!!

As I know and per the opinions in these forums, I believe that passport is just a travel document(also, proof of your citizenship in some countries). And hence, not a must at the time of interview for citizenship.

Anyway, that will be taken away at the time of citizenship(in case of Indian citizens as there is no dual citizenship policy).

Thought I will update this.
I asked around a lot.
Looks like a valid passport is not really a must but you do need a passport.
I can never be sure, that seems to be the majority opinion.
Thanks all for posting your opinions.

Just out of curiosity,

Forget about the interview, what would you do if you had an emergency and have to go out of the country? WOuld you then try to 'validate' your passport?
