Expired F-1, But still in status needs visa renewal

Hello Everybody,

Iam a Ph.D student at university of maryland. My F-1 visa expired on july 2001 since then i haven't left US. I was in status for the entire period of my stay in US and i have been constantly supported by my university.I wanted to visit my country (INDIA) during the end of this summer. Iam not sure (which would be more benefit me in getting my visa renewed) if i have to go to canada to renew my visa or go back to india and renew my visa there. Although i heard of some cases where there was some delay in processing the visa (In india)..All the cases i heard of was for H-1.. so iam confused.. please help...

if you are denied a visa in Canada, you will have to travel back to India to get it.
