Expired B1/B2 visa

I came to US on a tourist visa in 2001, it was valid for only 3 month , but I never went back and instead decided to study here. Thus,my B1 tourist visa has been expired for more than 5 years now. During this time in US I have studied and academically excelled, although, I haven't been working in my field since I have no work permit nor SSN If I find a company that would agree to sponsor my H1 visa, is it posible to switch from my expired B1 to H1 visa? Can someone help me in this matter?

I seriously doubt a change of status will be approved after accruing 5 years of illegal presence.

The institution where u studied didn't ask for a valid visa for admission???
