Experts need help..

A friend of mine came to USA a while back on B1\B2 visa..thru company A. Went back to his home country and came back to USA on H1B visa thru company B..recently he got laid off...

The question is can he transfer his H1B visa status to B1\B2 status..while being here in US..or should he need to go outside the country and come back on B1\B2 visa..please advise.
 
He can file for a change of status.

Pick up the form from the INS website..it clearly says..application to change/extend non immigrant status I-539 (I am not sure about the number).
He could also go out..surrender his I-94 while going out and then come back in..showing the B1/B2 visa..and there by get a B1/B2 status.
The first option will take time but the advantage is he is still in the country ..so can apeal and re-file etc.
THe second option is quicker..but you have to take that risk on re-entry that you could be questioned.
