Jaxon - from your earlier query you mentioned that the first time H1b candidates should appear for a personal interview. I was going through the chennai consulate website and they clearly state that all h1b applicants are eligable for drop-box.

"Is applying in the H-1B or L-1 visa category, either for the first time or as a renewal and their dependents (spouse and children)

Did they recently change this without updating the website. Is anyone aware of this? I will be going to India this december to get my stamping done (from F-1 to H1B).

Please advise.

I emailed the chennai consulate and they replied (less than a week back) that all H1B applicants must use drop box. I think Jaxen mentioned in some later thread that the consulate has returned back to drop box procedure. Perhaps the interview thing was temporary. Keep checking the news...
 
They had people come for interview few weeks ago. They are back to drop box now. See Murthy's bulletin from last week or the week before.
