well, i am almost in disbelief: this is the year I apply for naturalization! after 14 years!
and now i need some help if anyone can spare an advice:
i may apply august 14th, so I will send my papers a few days before. now, i would need to get everything done and have the application for us passport mailed in before Dec 31 as I HAVE to go abroad for a school semester on Jan 3. how do I go about making sure I am done with all this in 4.5 months? (ideally i should have the us passport by jan 3 but i guess i will apply for rtd again.

any help is appreciated! thx!

How to make sure N400 happens in 4.5 months? Pay a bribe.

Seriously, while many cases can get processed fast, there is no guarantee in immigration.
If you go through the guide to naturalization and the N400, all the questions there should give you hints on what they can ask.
Keeps your documents ship shape. Check whether your eligibility is borderline or clear cut ... for each question. Whenever it is borderline, collate all evidence in your favor.

BTW, you can apply Aug 14 because? Can you confirm the category and the residency dates?
[ EDIT / ADD ] : Note that you can get same day passport if you can show proof of travel. If you are running neck and neck in terms of time, you should go for it.

You can't expedite your case unless you have a military based application. However, what you can do is apply in August go for early FP when you get FP letter and hope for interview and oath before you leave.

Have you explored the possibility of applying earlier than Aug/15. The only way to increase the possibility of getting USA PP earlier, is to put in your application at an early date. The rest depends on your luck and location.

i may apply august 14th, ...
Is August 14 your earliest eligible date to apply? If yes, applying on that date could make things worse for two reasons:

1. Sometimes USCIS miscounts by 1 or 2 days and rejects the application without an interview for applying too early.
2. If they count right and accept the application, applying on the earliest possible date increases the chance of having the interview before your 5-year (or 3-year, if applicable) GC anniversary. That results in the interview being rescheduled, or "decision can be made" after the interview, either of which risks a delay.

hmm, well aug 14 is the date of 9o days before 5 years residency is up(based on pol. asylum). i have been waiting for this for 14 years. so when do you nice people advise i should MAIL in my application? on aug 15th? should i include a letter asking for speeding up the process...

Speeding up will not happen.
You should mail it around Aug 20 to be safe from CIS miscounting, and to be safe from getting an early interview which can put your case on "decision can not be made" for a few weeks.

but how come i should wait aug 20th to mail it of my date is aug 14. it is a simple thing really...

aug 14 2005. when would you apply? which date? i just need to get my passport by dec 31 for school reasons...

You can apply 90 days before that date. So if my math is right, you can send the paperwork already. Look at my signature.

Yes, and that's why we have been asking you for residency dates... because you can apply 90 days before 5 years are up.

Send the form over the next week, and you are expedited already!!
[EDIT] Take some time to read the guide to naturalization.

If your "Resident since" date is Aug 14, 2005, then you can already submit N-400, as of now. The reason is that you are allowed to submit an N-400 up to 90 days prior to satisfying the continuous residency requirement.

As others have suggested, you should read up on the "Guide to naturalization", http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf
Also, to stress again, there is no guarantee that the process will be complete by Dec 31.

According to the resident date you gave us, you were eligible to apply around the May 15, 2010. So you should send in your application as soon as possible. From June 15 to Dec 31, you still have six months and half. And from the current time frame most of the applicants were able to get the whole process done in 5 month, but each case is unique, it might take longer than usually. And from looking at other applicants' experiences and time frame on this board, it usually takes about 1 months to get the finger print notice, and then another month to get the interview notice, then another month to have the actual interview, then about another month to have the oath, but again each location varies, so it all depends on your location. I have heard that some states, like NJ, has a slower process time.
If you want to expediting the process, send it using FedEx express to their express lock box, it is always faster than using priority mail. Try a walk-in for your finger print, but not all locations allow that. And make an appointment with passport agency, you can get the passport in same day if you have the prove of your departing.

sorry people! aug 14 is my -90 days from the date on the card (november 14). when should i mail it in?

It's actually a 90 day rule (rather than a 3 months rule).
Since there are 31 days in August and 31 Days in October, it looks like the earliest you can mail an N-400 is on August 16. However, it is a really good idea to tack on at least a couple of days, to avoid any conceivable counting problems which do happen. You really DO NOT want your application rejected because the IO decides that you submitted it one day too early, before becoming eligible. So I'd suggest mailing your application on Aug 18 or Aug 19.
