Be optimistic. I guess the FBI guys reply in more than 90% cases ( may be 100%), it depends upon the workload they have. I have had sent an email to them on Sept. 29, 2004 and got a reply back on 29th Oct. It took a month but they replied in a decent manner and with every detail like when the name check request by USCIS was made and when the FBI sent the results back to USCIS etc. So I would say that they will reply sooner or later.
May be people like us who want to know their name check status, have flooded their system with email & faxes and it has increased their workload and in turn it has increased the response time.
Basically what I learnt from the reply is that the name check happened within first 1 month after the filling of I-485 case.
