Ex-Employer Issue

hi all,

I am facing a problem with my ex-employer.

I worked with this company for 7 months and they were paying me too less,so, I joined another company and gave my ex-employer a weeks notice. Now, they got really pissed and told me that I should give 2 weeks notice
and also asked me to look at all the agreements i had signed. I had signed a general agreement, and also a promissory note that said if i quit the company before 2 years, then I should pay $XXXX.

they have not paid me for the month of dec and jan for which I had worked at the client location and in addition they have an attorney who is their friend send me a letter asking me for $XXXXX in a weeks time, if not there will be legal proceedings against me.

My new employer says this is a standard threatening act most desi companies do. I just want to know from you all, if any of you had a similar situation and how did you work through the same? I not only need the monthly dues paid, but also need the paystubs for those months.

Pls. advice...

Thanks,

Well first of all read contracts before you sign them. If you sign a contract that is against your best interest, its first and foremost your own fault. That having said, some states disallow such contracts if you were actually employed. Contractors on the other hand are regulated less in most states. Its probably reasonably safe to simply ignore your old employer and send them a letter that you disagree and that you are not willing to pay. If they decide to enforce the contract in court, get a good attorney.
