Evidence of Permanent Residence

I know the law requires that permanent residents carry proof of their legality to remain in the USA at all times. It took us a long time and a lot of work and money to get that card and I am uncomfortable carrying it with me. I prefer to have it locked up in my safe!!

Can someone tell me, does the law require you to carry the green card itself, or just evidence of permanent residence, such as a copy of the card or my alien number?

I'm ready to show proof of resident status always and so, personally I keep the GC @ home (planning on getting a fire-safe to store it) to produce it anytime if required. I do keep a copy of the GC in my wallet of course!
