This is one of the general requirements for US citizenship application

"has been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the previous five years (absences of more than six months but less than one year shall disrupt the applicant's continuity of residence unless the applicant can establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period) "

I like to know how can one "establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period"

We have our GC for 3 years and my wife is planning to stay in India for
around 8 months. I like to know whether it will be a problem when we apply for citizenship. I like to know how can one "establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period". Is there a standard procedure like submitting tax statement, bills ..etc or it will be subjective.

Thanks for any help

Based on my recent experience, it's every bit as subjective as entering the US on a tourist visa--you can provide documentary evidence such as bills, tax returns, etc., but in the end you're at the mercy of the interviewing officer.

Good luck!

Keep the trip less than 6 months.

I recommend that if possible keep the trip less than 6 months. That will keep a lot of things simple. If she has to, make a trip here and go back to India to keep single trip less than 6 months.

Thanks mthakkar
