Error in I-94

I would have stopped renewing my EAD if it was not for an error that the immigration officer at JFK made. In May 2001 when I returned from my trip abroad he gave me an I-94 that said and still says (as I did not change it) "Asylum Granted, Employment Authorized, VALID UNTIL MAY 12, 2002". This is why I still have to renew my EAD so I have proof of my status as my I-94 "expired". I have to come back to New Jersey DMV every year and show my EAD so they don't suspend my Driver's License. Do you guys have an idea on how I can get this I-94 error fixed? I thought of going to Canada by plane so I could surrender my I-94 and get a new one upon my return to the US?
Would they give me a problem when I leave the US because of my "expired" I-94?

If you were granted asylum your I-94 should have indefinite date. So i strongly recommend that you go to the local immigration officer and get a new I-94 that is valid indefinetely. If you live in NY, i believe your local INS office is in 26 federal plaza. The same thing happened to me after coming back from Canada in 1998 and they gave me an I-94 that was valid for one year. I contacted my lawyer and he got me my I-94 that is valid indefinitely.

Karina, why not take your EAD and go to SS office and apply for unrestricted SS card? after i got mine, i went in and gave it to the HR and told them not to bother me again about the EAD. it looks just like USC's SS card.

good luck

I actually was given an unrestricted ssn from the start, somehow, but New Jersey DMV would not accept it as proof of my status.

Shamshon, do you know what your lawyer did to get you a new I-94?
The reason I'm asking is that to get to the local CIS is a hassle and an extra day from work with no guarantee...

Kelvin2088, thanks for the link, but I think this does not refer to asylees. It says "nonimmigrant I-94"....

I've encountered exactly the same error done by USCIS and I filed out that form and submited in person in the local branch in Los Angeles. they issued me a correct I-94 card with correct information right away
as i mentioned, error's done by cis so there's no charge for that
