Entry with 10- month return ticket

My parents are visiting us soon on a tourist visa (10 year visa). They have been here about 3 times before over the last 5-6 years, usually stayed 6 months or less. This time, we booked their return ticket 10 months apart from the date of arrival, because they are interested in staying longer this time (and request extension, assuming it is approved). Change of return date to 6 months or less is not possible at this point on a short notice.

Anyway, my question is - IF the immigration officer asks them for the itinerary printout and questions them about the return booking after 10 months, will that be a problem for them? For instance, can they deny entry or give just 3 months entry to them, or something to that effect? Any suggestions on how to best answer to this question, if asked? Thanks

Obviously there is always a question about how long one intends to stay and when they say 10 Months, they will be send back to the secondary room, in this case honesty is the best policy and tell them they intend to apply for an extension before thier six months authorized stay will expire. ( By saying this atleast the officer will know they are expecting a six months entry )
The officer at port of entry on thier discretion can even give a three months entry, there is no telling. But since they have a strong travel history as they have came and left US in thier authorized time in the past they most likely will not have a denial of entry.

If you are a POE inspector, would you call a 10 month trip a '"visit"? The officer at the POE will make the determination of whether to grant admission and if so, for how long. He/she will have full discretion with regards to that decision.
If asked, speak the truth and nothing else. Do not volunteer any information.
