Entering US from Canada on expired visa stamp

Hi All,
I am a Programmer Analyst on H1B. I applied my first H1 renewal in June, 2010 and still awaiting the approval. I also became a Canadian PR holder in April, 2010 because my wife is a Canadian Citizen. My first landing should be done before 10th March, 2011. I am planning to go for my first landing and visa stamping at the same time.

My question here is that I at least need one month or even more to get visa stamping appointment in Toronto/Ottawa. Just in case I am not able to get an appointment before my due date for the first landing, can I do the first landing and come back in a day or two without the stamping?

Thanks.
