Employment agreement - employer threatening for legal case

My company A is in New Jersey which had my H1...
I joined client in Virginia through a middle company B in VA..

Now I have joined the client using AC21 portabilty.
I had some employment agreement with my company A.
It has been more that 1 year since I left company A. Now my company is threating to sue me as the contract had non-competence clause which prohibits me to join end client..

Is this a valid case ? Can my company sue me even it has been 1 year I left. ?
Should I try to negotiate or just see what happens next ?

Please HELP !!!
 
What is the content of non compete clause in your agreement.

Non compete clause may be 2 yrs or 3 years, if that is the case your employer can sue you to death.
