I am looking to switch careers from electrical engineering to data. Would getting a data engineer job with a degree in electrical engineering cause issues with TN work permit at the border?

Yes. You do not have the required educational equivalent. "Data engineering" is not enginerring, no more than domestic or sanitation engineer.

That is a Comp Sys Analyst job at best.

Thanks for the message.

There was one guy who had a degree in mechanical engineering but somehow got a job as a machine learning software engineer at google from Canada. It was not a inter company transfer.

it is a bit different but not sure how that was possible.

Does it need a degree in computer science ?

Thanks for the post.

Sorry, trying to figure out how software engineer is different from data engineer. They both have the term "engineer" in the title.

Software engineer is not a traditional discipline and title is used vaguely.

Is it the job title or my education that has to match the title?

Where do i find this information, the government website state "computer system analyst" is an occupation that is approved for TN.

What about positions like devops engineer, site reliability engineer, data scientist. Some of them require computer science or related degrees.

Would electrical engineering be considered a relevant degree? How do i know which position is okay and which is not? I am a little tired of being an electrical engineer.

I think a little more research on what is a TN is in order. You're an engineer, you can figure out google.

"Data" is a red flag for officers, harkening back to data processing. It isn't engineering, even if a company calls it that. It's the job description that defines the category, not the internal fluffed title.

You can work in any field you want... In Canada. For US, you need a job related to your degree for TN, Or you can't try H1-B.

This is getting circular now, bye.

I have an Electrical Engineering degree in Venezuela, I am a electrical draftsman in Quebec, Canada. I would like to know how can apply for TN visa in USA.

Do bootcamps count as formal education or do i need a college degree from an accredited university to show the office ?

computer system analyst is a valid occupation. I would think data engineering or dev ops can be classified as analyst position as it has very little coding/no coding.

Electrical engineering is a closely relevant degree not a direct one. Maybe a good company lawyer can make things work in this case.
