while admitting in college Will he come under foriegn citizen category?
All kids in india will have to take nationality certficate before they appear for 10th board exams, what will be the case for my son? can anyone explain me.

Hi,

It should not be any problem.

1. He/She can write Enigneering/Medical entrance exams if required to. Normall they have some quota called NRI, which most of kids born outside India fall under.

2. They can take any private sector job, however they can't write any UPPSC exams (engineering services, civil services and other top notch govt jobs) and can't enter in Defence labs either.

3. They can't own a land that is useful for agricultural purpose , unless they have dual citizenship and no voting rights.

4. If they want to have 2 and 3 at age 18 they can give their US Citzenship and take their parents.

Again I am not expert, this is information I gathered from various sources.

Thanks you SDQmer

But what I heard that the kids with USC/any other national than india cannot sit for any gov pre-medical(AIIMS)/engg entrance exams , only higher education they r allowed to do like (MS.M.Tech...)

The problem is after going back to India i dont have plans to come back here- default my son will have his education in India as well as college, i want to know the options provided for him there.

Your kid can decide at 18 years of age whether to choose Indian or American Citizenship. If he or she has already been issued an American passport, he or she can then renounce his or her American citizenship at the local American Consulate and reclaim Indian citizenship, by virtue of both the parents being Indian.

However, your kid cannot continue to be an American citizen and also try to get enrolled in a professional course in India, unless he or she applies thru' the NRI quota. U can't have the cake and eat it too!

Thanks Mr.Catch

"U can't have the cake and eat it too!"

I am not trying to take advantage in India by having USC for my child,my sole concern is my child education either be it here in US or India, wanted to provide the best for him.

I do understand your aspirations to provide a good education for your kid. But honestly, who knows which field is going to rule the roost 18 years from now or for that matter how laws change in India by that time.

I do know a friend of mine who completed his Engineering studies claiming Indian citizenship throughout and then claimed a foreign country (European one) citizenship gained through his parents, while still in India. His case was ofcoz easy becos he had an Indian birth certificate, whereas a case such as yours would always gather attention with education officials becos of a birth certificate from US.

If you take the Dual Citizenship ( When they will start accepting the applications), there are some benifits for US born kids' Education. Check out Dual Citizenship info. Check this: http://www.cgihouston.org/dualC.htm

To Amishah

the link u provided states abt OIC-Overseas Indian Citizenship, not dual nantionality.

Overseas Citizenship is not Dual Nationality

It may kindly be noted that Overseas Citizenship is not a full citizenship of India and, therefore, does not amount to dual citizenship or dual nationality.

But With OIC I think Education is favourable

" All facilities as available to children of NRIs for getting admission to
educational institutions in India including Medical and Engineering
Colleges, Management Institutes etc. under the general category and
membership of various housing scheme etc. will be open to holders of
Certificate of Registration. "

I heard that htis is under hold from Jan 2005

Education is Asian countries are much easier than European countries. There will be lots of formalities to be settles down before and then education itself is costly inspite one can get scholarship for it.
