EAD renewal question

My 485 is pending and I plan to keep my H1-B till I get GC. But just in case, if I need to use EAD after it expires, can I renew the old one or apply for a new one? I am guessing it would be a renewal if I send out my application before the old one expires?

Yes that's correct. If you keep the EAD only then apply at least 90 days before expiry, if you do not receive the new EAD in 90 days you have to set up an appointment at the local office for an interim EAD.
