EAD renewal or new application

My wife had an EAD that we never used and it expired around a year ago or so. Now my wife wants to work and I am going to file an EAD application for her; Can I file it as a renewal application or do I have to file it as a new application? Also, does anybody know, what's the difference between these two types of applications?
