EAD OR H1 and misc issues

I am in a real dilemna,
I applied for H1 extension receipt date Dec 6 and whenever I check it says the same thing ie we have received your petition and this takes 30 - 120 days.
The Nebraska Service Center is now processing Dec 26 so most probably my H1 extension got rejected or incurred a query.

I have to goto India urgently and need to goto Canada to get H1 stamped anyways, so I am thinking of switching to Advanced Parole /EAD.

This is frustrating can anyone show me some light why I shouldnt switch or should

I have been reading also that one of the reasons it is dangerous to switch to EAD from H1 is because if by sheer bad luck you lose your job while on EAD then immediately you are out of status and screwed.

Is this true? How long can you stay unemployed , is there a grace period within which you need to find a job?

If you are on EAD , for all practical purposes you have to have a job when USCIS wants to verify your employment (like thru a Employment RFE). Otherwise EAD (AP) is one of the smoothest of docs.
