EAD Expired

My I140 was approved in Jan 2005. My I485 has a received date of April 26, 2004. In February of 2005 I had my fingerprints done and then after that no news.
Currently, my EAD has expired. Can someone tell me if I need to reapply for EAD even though I have an active H1-B. Also, what is the purpose of an EAD with an H1-B visa.

I am sorry if I come accross as so clueless but I really need help here.

---------- at present you have H1 status. if you feel that you should keep valid EAD as back up (to join any employer) then apply for EAD. many keep valid EAD and AP all depends on person.
Also, what is the purpose of an EAD with an H1-B visa.

Thanks

I am trying to change employers at this point, so I think I should reapply for EAD.
Thanks for your prompt responses.

You can even do H1 transfer to change jobs. You can apply for EAD renewal at later date and save some $$ now. Your call.

--better join new employer with H1 transfer also apply for EAD (USCIS says that file EAD AP 6 months advance)
