My suggestion would have been to wait with sending your RFE response until just before you leave for your trip, but I suppose it's too late for that! How long is your planned trip? Usually your IL arrives a month or more before your interview (although there are no guarantees). See if you find recent cases at the Santa Ana DO at the various immigration trackers online, and how long it took from RD to ID, although not even that is any guarantee.
Short of stressing out, the best you can do is to keep your dates flexible if you can and don't plan for your trip to be too long. There is a procedure to request a new ID if you have proof you have a prior travel arrangement, however this doesn't always work so well, and by the time the communication trickles down to your IO your case could already be denied. So you'd be well advised to reschedule your trip instead of the ID, unless you're ready to start over with the process.
If your trip is, let's say, 2-3 weeks, and you haven't gotten an IL yet a week before you travel, you're most likely safe. But if you leave without having received your IL, be sure to have someone check your mail regularly for it, because you don't want your ID on short notice when you return, or worse, the unlikely event that your ID happenend during your trip.
Here's what I did, I also had a 3 week trip planned smack in the middle of the AOS process ... sent the RFE response the week before we left (after holding it hostage for about 2 months), verified case was resumed, then we left. When I got back and picked up mail (on hold at post office), I found my IL. Was issued in the middle of my vacation, fortunately with a date still one month away from when we returned.
Hope this helps and good luck!
