This is a very resource ful forum. Thank you all for keeping it alive.
My wife (Ethiopian) received NL recently with case number 2009AF00015xxx. I will appreciate if some one can share their expereince regarding the following points.
1. The naming system in Ethiopia does not conform to the western system. There is no family or sure name. Some people use their father's name and others use their grandfather's name. usually three names appear in the pasport; the given name, the father's name and the grandfatther's name. Whcih name is accepted as family name by US consulates?
2. We are living in South Africa and the interview is going to be in Johannesburg, South Africa. Which number should we check for being current? The cutoff number for Africa or for Ethiopia?
3. If the family members decide to follow the winner at a later date, should they go for interview with the winner? How long can one stay behind and follow? The dead line for issuing the visa I think is September 30, how about a deadline entring US as a family member?
Thanks

Congratulations!
1. I don't know. How is your name in the passport?
2. Sorry, I don't know that either. I would think that the cut-off for Ethiopia is the important one.
3. As far as I know, they HAVE to go to the interview with the winner (if this is not true, please correct me). Like the principal applicant (your wife) the others have 6months to activate the greencard (they have to do that either together with the winner or later). After 6months, the immigrant visa is invalid. However, you can always go back to Africa for a little while after the activation.
An advise: Take your time with filling out the forms. It doesn't matter whether you send them back after a few days or after a few weeks.

and good luck for you.

Hello,

My CN seems high. This number was current around July on the previous years, except for last year (DV 2008) on which case my number is not yet current.

Any one with any idea why the cut off numbers of some countries (Like Nigeria and Ethiopia) is posted separately? What does that mean?

Thank you and good luck to all
