I'm a winner of DV 2006 lottery and I will have my interview in January in my Country and I just wanna know what documents should I bring to my interview. I'm on F-1 student visa and I'm already 3 years in US. I didn't wanna do AOS because somebody told me it's taking them forever and I decided to do CP. Also, do I have to have police certificate from US because I live here already 3 years.
I would appreciate any help

Thanks :)

i do not understand why you decided to do CP ? who told you that it is going to take forever ? i am in the same situation as you and i am doing AOS.

You did smart choice, CP is much faster than AOS. Just look at Local office processing dates. I do AOS because my NP expired, otherwise I would do CP.

Good luck

I do have my F-1 status untill 2007 and it's not dangerous for me to go home, I hope. The lady at the local immigration office in VA told me that even though I'm the winner of 2006 if I will do AOS they don't care and they go in the order and she told me that they are working on 2004 and I figured that I would not even have a chance to get to the interview, that's why I decided to do CP. Also one other lady told me that it takes 10-12 months to proceed the papers and she advised me that it's better for me to go home because it's much faster and you get your visa on the day of your interview and for me that is in January because my number will be current in January. My number is EU55xx and cut off number for december is 5500.

Thanks for your help

well. since many thingk always mistirious with dv visa lottery processings, i would not say more..... i hope everything will be ok for you :-) i am also winner of dv2006 with case number EU66xx.
P.S how do you know that for december cut of number 5500 ? we already discuss on this forum that it difficult to predict that before knowing "real" information from official site:
http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/bulletin/bulletin_2631.html and for now only cuts off numbers for november is knowns: 3900, if you are from EU region.

5500 was posted on Tuesday or Monday.

C. ADVANCE NOTIFICATION OF THE DIVERSITY (DV) IMMIGRANT CATEGORY RANK CUT-OFFS WHICH WILL APPLY IN DECEMBER

For December, immigrant numbers in the DV category are available to qualified DV-2006 applicants chargeable to all regions/eligible countries as follows. When an allocation cut-off number is shown, visas are available only for applicants with DV regional lottery rank numbers BELOW the specified allocation cut-off number:

Region All DV Chargeability Areas Except Those Region Listed Separately
AFRICA AF 7,500 Ethiopia 6,800

Nigeria 5,400

ASIA AS 2,500 Except: Bangladesh 2,300
EUROPE EU 5,500
NORTH AMERICA (BAHAMAS) NA 5
OCEANIA OC 270
SOUTH AMERICA, and the CARIBBEAN SA 400

Hey, it is very hard to predict the numbers but they are on the web. Check out this link
http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/bulletin/bulletin_2712.html
I always call Kentucky after 20-th of the month because they move to new numbers. The lady at Kentucky told me to call after 20-th of November and I will know more. They can't predict how the numbers will move but I'm 55xx and they are on 5500 so I'm very close.I hope everythink will work out for you too.

the funny thing is that IF jaca_usa doesn't get his immigrant visa, his F-1 visa will most likely be revoked since he just proved immigrant intent, and therefore, cannot be granted a non-immigrant visa....

other than that - CP is usually faster than AOS, but you never know.

LucyMo, thanks for your help and I'm she not he :)
I did contact american embassy in my country which is Croatia and I asked If I do not get a GC if I'm safe to go back to US and she told me YES, and also the lady at the embassy told me that there is no reason why I wouldn't get my GC. She said if I have all the documents and Affidavit of support which I have and valid I-20 and of course all the other documents that I'm OK. I live in VA in US and I called the USCIS and the lady told me on the phone that it's better to go home because it takes 10-12 months for AOS and she said to me that I can run out of time and that's why I decided to do CP. Every state is different and in Virginia is just taking too long. She told me that they are now working on 2004 and I told her that I'm a winner of 2006 lottery and she said doesn't matter. Also I told her that I'm F-1 student and I can't be in my country for so long because I will be out of status and she told me that on the day of my interview I will have a GC in my passport or not.

Well, the lady at USCIS 1-800 line was wrong a couple of times: DV AOS cases are processed separately from other immigration cases, therefore, they (most of the time) get processed on time. IT's the security check that may take too long...

Second, on the day of your consular interview you may receive an immigrant visa, but definitely not a GC. People who answer phones at 1-800 are just clerks, they are not immigration officers and sometimes they give out erroneous information.

If you don't get your immigrant visa and your F-1 isn't revoked, you need to return to the US within 5 months into the same program. Otherwise, you have to get a new I-20. Do get a signature on your I-20 and talk to your international advisor about the rules for F-1 students returning after a prolonged absense. Just in case - cover all your bases. Good luck!
