Dual Citizenship

I heard (from some friends not 100% sure) that both Indian and Pakistani people can now retain their citizenship along with their US citizenship. Is it true for asylees, not that many asylees would care? If yes, how one goes about it if they want to keep both countries citizenship. Any comments

Only Pakistan allows dual citizenship. NOT India.

IF you are indian, you are automatically denouncing your Indian citizenship by accepting American citizenship (according to indian constitution).

If you are from pakistan, just do nothing. You will remain citizen (atleast in their books) unless you contact the consulate and apply for cancellation. While going to Pakistan, use pakistani passport. While coming back, use US passport. It is legal.

I meant to say it is normal for people who have become US citizens from other avenues. But you do not want to do that if you have followed Asylee route. (You should not want to visit that country, to begin with)

Thanks Lazer

Thanks for the response Lazer. The reason I asked I have family that I know here. They are US citizen now and they are going back for a visit to Pakistan. They are visiting with their two kids along. For the four of them they paid $200 a pop for visas. I told them that shouldn't have to pay for their visas but they told me that now they are US citizen so they don't have their Pakistani citizenship anymore. Actually she wanted to buy some land but now she is being told that she'll have to buy it her brother's name who is in Pakistan. Can she still apply for her Pakistani passport now that she is US citizen?
I have no intention of visiting my own country. I agree with you but let me ask you this what if an asylee renews his paasport afte he/she becomes a US citizen?

One more thing, the reason I included India in my dual nationality question is. On the home page of Immigration.com look on the right side under selected topics. It says "Indian Parliament approves dual citizenship".
Thanks

Some people are just scared and do not want to get into problems. And you know how screwed up officials of these countries are. So people usually want to keep it simple, obtain a visa and avoid the hassles later on.

To obtain pakistani visa is insanity, because they just try to rip you off. Just imagine if you are a family of 3 kids. Anyway... Pakistan also issues a National Id card for foreign nationals for 10 years, which you can carry with your US passport without obtaining visa. However that card itself is so expensive that you are better off obtaining a US visa if you just want to travel once or twice. Another alternative is to have a pakistani passport and a US passport for traveling in both directions. It is absolutely normal and I have seen Canadian & British citizens using dual passports. (I think some people are also scared of US goverment for using two passports although its normal)

Regarding Indian dual citizenship, this is very new and they havent finalized it. Read the article carefully. It says

"Although the Bill has been passed out the rules, regulations and requirements are still under process."

The bottom line is that to indian/pakistani people, US citizenship is too important and they are willing to spend money on visas rather than answering questions to un-educated officials. That is why people do not follow the easy path.

best,
