Driver's License

Hello. I am in the prosess of getting the GC. I got married to an American citizen in 2000 and we have been married almost 4 years this year and no GC yet. I guess my status is called "pending" and I have a question. I went to the local DM to get a driver's license a couple years ago and rejected because I don't have a visa. It's very hard not to have a license here and have to ask everyone to give me a ride. Is there anything I can do for this? Or I just need to wait and wait and wait till INS finally "decides" to give me a GC?

Also, we had a final interview on Feb. 2003 and I haven't heard anything from INS since then which is more than a year. I keep writing a letter to them. Is it normal to take THIS long? I've been reading other people's posts here and no one seems to be waiting this long! What can I do?

Wife is from Bulgaria and she hasnt had a licence for 2 years !! all she does is use her international licence ...IF you have one from your previous country you can use it for 1 year of when you enter the USA ...we travel to Bulgaria every year so it gets renewed like that ..

Good luck ..and NO I.N.S shouldnt be taking this long .

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I know about international license, unfortunately that isn't my chioce since I don't have one from my home. I guess I have to wait till I get a GC. I did everything that I was asked to do, even went for the interview. Thhere is nothing to do so all I can do is wait and wait.

May I ask...how long did it take for your wife to get a green card after the interview?

Well, every state has different requirements. PA, for example does not need a visa, but needs an I-94, for ex. Other ppl in this forum have described how NJ is issuing DLs based on the expiration date of your EADs. Check out your state's DMV/DOT's website and see what their exact requirements are. I'm sure as a beneficiary of an AOS petition, you probably do have an EAD (if not, you should get one). You should be able to argue your way through to acquire your license with your EAD.

Just my 2 cents... :D

EAD is the Employment authorization card. You could have had it by now and had your DL also.
My husband tried to get his DL in maryland and since he didn;t have his EAD yet he got rejected, but with it he could've gotten it right then. Now he has his EAD and SSN and can get his license soon.

crazy idea

Not sure, where you live. But if you really need DL, you might want to consider moving to another state temporarily for couple of months and get DL there. States have different laws and as others have stated, its easier to get DL in some states as compared to others.

Do you have your Social SSN? Have you tried with that? If they deny you at the DMV, go to another location and try there.

My husband had trouble getting his SSN because the  clerk at the SSN office had a problem with his 2 last names not being on his EAD (Spanish countries with the dad's then mom's last name). He ended up going to another office and bringing all his papers and it took less than a week. The same clerk turned down another lady while we were there because of the same reason, her 2 last names on her passport.

Does this help any? Keep trying.
