Driver's License without EAD approved?

Hi folks,

I am still waiting for an asylum decision to come in the mail after the interview. My 2nd EAD is pending, I just applied. However, my husband assured me that I can get a driver's license without having an EAD and they approved it after verifying that my case is pending with USCIS. It is in Michigan. Is this normal, or do they usually not give Driver's License when you don't have an EAD approved?

Thanks.

If your case is pending with USCIS, they shall issue you a limited duration Driver's License, if you any residence proof as per the state DMV requirements.

It might depend on the specific law of your state, Michigan in this case.
I know there are some not immigrant-friendly states that requires you to have a valid EAD before obtaining a driver licence.
I would advise you to call your local DMV office to ask them about the type of documents needed for a pending asylum case.
