Driver license Question

I went down to two DMV offices this morning and they both rejected me. The first i went to said if i had an old license that it'd be possible, but it should be a state license though and not from another country. The other place just told me point-blank that it's impossible.

I told them about the DMV website, that it states with the I-797 form i should be eligible to the license but they didn't hear me. Maybe they're not informed about it. I don't know! I didn't go to Broward as i said i would. I went to the ones first that were much close to me. I guess i should have just stayed with broward.

I got both id and dl in florida with just my passport, noa for i485 and i765, and driver license from my country, expired i94 more than 1yr, i applied for id first, then asked the lady that attended to me if i could apply for license, she said why not as far as i can be issued an id, that i can also be issued a driver's license, so you can get a dl without ssn, the only thing is that they issued a 1yr id and dl, and on it, it said "temporary". Goodluck.

Wow then it is possible to get it without the Social number. Are you in miami too? if you are in what DMV office did you go to?

SSN isn't required if you don't have it. You can still process the DL.

Hi, Greencattle. I read your thread when you were asking about the driver license too, and you said that you actually got it. Congrats!!:) Someone suggested you to go to the dmv office in broward, is that where you went?

This is exactly what I thought would happen. The law says that without SSN you are not "supposed" to get one. Now the thing is when it comes to foreigners, some representatives do not really know the rules fully.

For example NOA's are part of the "immigration status" proof, but some of the clerks do not know that. Others "may" let you get your DL without SSN, but I think that its because they made a mistake because as someone said there may be some specific people (H4b??) who do not need the SSN.

But generally speaking no SSN I think means no DL.

They didn't ask me for a SSN when i went there. They only looked a the NOA, my passport and that was it. Maybe they didn't ask because at the point they saw me only with the NOA they immediately thought that it shouldn't be working. I really wish that they don't ask for it though.

No i'm not in maimi, i'm in orlando florida, meanwhile i also had my finger print notices when i went, i think you should try different dmv's, one will issue you one, even if it is temporary like mine.

I was reading about SSNs in wikipedia and supposedly there is no Law in the US and requires its citizens to obtain an SSN. So how can the DMV require an SSN? interesting...

You try 3708 West Oakland Park Blvd this office next time. They checked my NOAs and passport and let me in. Make online appointment. Good luck and hope you get one.

HeHe:D, Broward seem to be the heaven place for anyone like in my case who'd get a chance to have his license. They looked at my passports and NOAS, and they immediately let me in. I was so happy! I haven't received the license yet though because they said that i need to take the drug alcohol course. I hope the license goes for a year.

Thank you all who have responded in my thread for all your suggestions:)

Congrats braveone, seems like getting a Florida DL is more difficult than getting a GC. :D

Just to clarify any confusion, my understanding is the law does NOT require an SSN to get a DL (in Florida at least). If you follow the discussion about NY DL's it's the same situation. There is a law that requires SSN information to be collected "if one was issued to you" but if none was issued, it does not need to be collected.

But I think it's true what many others of you said, that the SSN is considered a universal ID number here and you may have a hard time getting a DL (or many other things for that matter) without the SSN, just because probably 99% of the people they serve on a daily basis have an SSN, and it may come down to finding a clerk that knows what to enter into the system without an SSN.

For that matter, if you are ever asked for your SSN for purposes other than government, or starting a new job, or opening a bank account (often companies you purchase stuff from ask it just so they have an identifier for you), offer to give them another 9-digit number than your SSN. The only entity that has a right to know your SSN is government and your employer (so they can withhold your pay) and financial institutions so they can report your interest.

Aus,

I also have a right to know his social security number, so that if he's paying any taxes to save social security, I can bust him at 3am... :D:D His wife should also know his social.... to claim the benefits....:( You might wonder which benefits....?

Al, when my wife first revealed her SSN to me, I knew it was true love and we were meant to be together forever ... ;)

It's interesting but my drivers license was renewed based on my previous licence and, presently, I'm out of status.

ULTRON

This is my first time posting but i've been lurking around since last week. From the time my case started i spend sometimes in the internet looking for every little information. This morning i was searching the board regarding if there was a possibility for someone to obtain a driver license while their case was still pending, the answers i've found came up not so much good but not too bad either. I have my I-485 receipt, and some people have said they were able to get their license with it....well more like renew it. This would be my first time however to try to get a license, so i'm wondering if it only works when you're renewing it. Also i don't have a ss# or EAD, i've just recently started on my case. Can this be a problem? I'm in florida and currently in college. It's really hard for me not being able to drive. It's really depressing.

I would really appreciate if anyone could give me a little more info in this. If it's possible or not to get the license with the I-485 receipt.

Thank you.

Yep everything you said it's true.

It's like every DMV has their own law. Before i went to broward, i did another DMV office and they told me that i needed an I-130 and the I-485 couldn't work. i just took my papers When she told me that and just left instantly because it was obvious at this point that each DMV operates differently.

SSN: A measure of true love? New one to me...

Al, when my wife first revealed her SSN to me, I knew it was true love and we were meant to be together forever ... ;)

Aus,

You just entered the Guiness Book of Records... SSN being an indication of true love is the first one I ever came across... I will assume that people should be issued SSN to experience the same level of true love as yourself? :p

I am glad she could trust you that much on the 1st date, that instead of giving you a good night kiss, she uttered these words.... my SSN is 654 87 4312... goodnight....:D:D:D

What about this NY Times headline? "SSN a measure of true love?" by a new immigrants...Mr. Aus, ;)

Al, it was more like the 500th date! More specifically, when I told her I want to add her name to mine on the fifty dollar US savings bond I was about to purchase, since I wasn't sure I'd be eligible to own it as a nonimmigrant. Later I found out I could own them myself, but many more savings bonds followed in both our names anyway ...

That first savings bond, EE series 2002, later became part of our initial evidence as the first official document that had both our names on it. Now tell me it ain't a true love thing! :)

I'm in Florida and my wife got her drivers license (temporary license) as a tourist. That license was valid as long as her I-94 was valid. She used the I-485 application receipt to renew it.. No problem! She does not have a SSN yet.
