Does passport need to be stamped for re-entry?

Hello,
I have a valid H1-B, but the stamp on the passport is old (though from the same company). I will be travelling to India, but could not find an appointment at the consulate before return journey.

My question is : Do I really have to have a stamp for re-entry?
[I have AP to use as an alternative, but prefer to use H1 instead.]

You need valid H1 stamp to reenter.

Even though you use AP, nothing is different from entering with H1. Why don't you use AP ?
